Avalon Student Earns $50K Scholarship

The Long Beach Unified School District extends its congratulations to senior student Jasmin Jimenez of Avalon TK-12 School for being a recipient of a $50,000 scholarship from Southern California Edison (SCE).

The scholarship is one of 30 awarded to high school seniors in Southern California who plan to major in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) studies.

Jimenez has committed to California State University, Long Beach, where she plans to pursue mechanical engineering as part of the university’s honors program

Growing up on Catalina Island has instilled in Jimenez a deep understanding of the effects of climate change. Through her firsthand experience with a severe drought and a shortage of reservoir water, she recognizes the pressing need for sustainable solutions. With her unwavering curiosity and passion, she hopes to apply her studies to create sustainable technology and machinery to help people worldwide.

“I’ve seen the extreme impacts of climate change, so I would love to use mechanical engineering to make a difference,” Jimenez shared with SCE.

Jimenez was presented with the scholarship award on Tuesday, March 26 in front of an assembly of her peers in the school’s gymnasium. Several SCE representatives and Avalon City Council members were also present. 

The Edison Scholars program by Edison International recognizes students who want to be makers of tomorrow. Since 2006, over 760 students have been awarded more than $15 million in scholarships through this program.
